Ikaat
Ikat is the name given to an ancient hand-loom technique used to pattern textiles that uniquely employs resist dyeing on the yarns prior to weaving the fabric.
A characteristic of ikat textiles is a certain “blurriness” to the pattern, a direct result of the extreme difficulty the weaver has in lining up the dyed yarns so that the pattern comes out as desired in the finished cloth.
These irregularities characteristic of ikat fabrics are prized by many textile collectors, valuing the natural beauty of hand-made arts in all its perfect imperfections.
